Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Nino Tsatsiashvili took part in a meeting on sexual harassment initiated by members of the Gender Equality Council of the Parliament of Georgia.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister reviewed the response to the facts of sexual harassment in the public space, the results achieved by the police and the existing challenges.
According to Nino Tsatsiashvili, 20 cases of sexual harassment have been exposed within one year after the law on sexual harassment was enacted and 21 individuals have been recognized as offenders.
It is notable, that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in the framework of trainings and regional meetings between the law enforcement agencies, both independently and in cooperation with international organizations, as well as along with the Office of the Public Defender, is actively raising awareness and conducts trainings on sexual harassment aimed for the law enforcers.
At the same time, the Human Rights Protection and Investigation Quality Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has developed a guideline for investigators on sexual harassment, which will help law enforcement officers to identify and respond to the cases of sexual harassment.
Nino Tsatsiashvili made special emphasis on the important role of the police in responding to sexual harassment in public spaces and noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue to actively train law enforcement officers on sexual harassment throughout this year and carry out activities aimed at raising their awareness.
